Had a terrible flare yesterday and today and today I broke out into a rash all over. No medications have been changed for months. Is this normal with a flare or is it possibly something that is unrelated? Any input would be helpful.

Members connected over the frustrating experience of unexplained rashes that accompany RA flares, with many describing painful symptoms ranging from shingle-like rashes on the neck to itchy, burning patches that come and go without clear answers from doctors. Several members shared practical relief strategies, including using Benadryl for itch and sleep, trying preventative daily medications like Allegra combined with Singulair and Zantac, supporting gut health with probiotics and bone broth, and identifying personal triggers like stress, red food dye, and certain biologics. A recurring theme was the difficulty of getting doctors to take these rashes seriously as separate issues, the importance of seeking specialist care from dermatologists or immunologists, and the reality that stress remains one of the hardest triggers to control.

After my second loading dose of Orencia, my body had the same type of reaction, hives and I've had them everyday since. The doctors said it was my Lupus overlapping my RA and stopped the Orencia and then put me on Benlysta. Benlysta gave me horrible heartburn so now we're going back to Simponi (the biologic I had been on for several years before trying Orencia). It's crazy, it's like Orencia flipped on some kind of switch in my body and now I can't get under control. My allergist suggested the same treatment you're doing, Allegra with Zantac 150mg. It helps but that's it. The only thing that really calms it, is a shot of steroid and only for a few days. Stress and red sauces do trigger it. STRESS being the worst and I agree stress is a tough one. Hope you get some relief soon, hope we all get some relief soon

Check with your Dr. Rashes are for reason. It could be you were exposed to something via environment, food, drink, or meds. Rebeccaccarnero is right in trying some Benadryl(diphenhydramine). great for allergic responses and due to the drowsiness side effect, great for sleep. Autoimmune diseases like RA, (there are 100 diseases or disorders under autoimmune) and many cause skin problems. I sure don't want you beginning some of the horrific skin stuff like psoriasis or psoriatic psoriasis which is a form of arthritis. Reason if this rash lasts please see a Dr. Let us know how you are doing. Prayers and love your way.

I have gotten chronic hives on and off for 15 or 16 years now. I never had a problem with it until I had a a reaction to Arava. Even though I only took the medicine for less than a week, I’ve had the problem with the hive like rash ever since. It took me years to find someone to take me seriously and treat the hives as a separate issue. I now see an immunologist. I say they are hives, but they start as little red dots (petechia), then turn into a red lacy rash, then a flat red raised rash that looks like hives. If they aren’t treated, they swell, turn purplish around the edges, are hot, and both hurt and itch. My immunologist thought is was Vasculitis, now she thinks it’s Kawasaki’s disease. No matter what, the medicine did something to my already screwed up immune system. No ER, general practitioner, allergist, even dermatologist helped. Ultimately, my immunologist put me on a preventative cocktail of fexofenadine (Allegra) or Zyrtec once a day, and singulair and Zantac once a day. Each one addresses a different part of your body’s allergic reaction and keeps it from starting. This works most of the time. I still get a flair a couple of times a year. The only way to stop the flair has been high dose oral steroids (40 to 60 mg per day) for up to three months once. Usually it’s just a few weeks though. I know what some of my triggers are - stress is one, another is red food dye - and do my best to avoid them. Stress is tough to avoid though! I hope this helps a little.
