Members shared mixed experiences with methotrexate injections for rheumatoid arthritis, with several noting that the standard starting dose is around 7.5ml, though it can be adjusted up to 10ml or higher depending on individual response. Many community members described difficult side effects including severe nausea, headaches, hair loss, unexplained bruising, diarrhea, and shoulder pain, though some found the injectable form caused fewer problems than pills. A recurring theme was that methotrexate often works best when paired with a biologic like Simponi Aria, Cimzia, Enbrel, or Humira, and that it can take time to see results, requiring patience and sometimes temporary steroid injections to manage pain while waiting for approval or for the medication to take effect.

@A myRAteam Member they make all the difference. My body rejected the pill form-too many gi issues and had more hair loss and side effects. W the injections i haven’t had half as many serious effects and minimal hair loss. I can tell when i miss a dose even by a few days.

I took methotrexate by pill and injection. With both I was terribly nauseous. Had unexplained bruising and hair loss. Dr. Changed me to Arava. No side effects. It helped. However I think it is about time to change meds again.
