Members shared mixed experiences with methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, with some finding it effective for joint pain while others experienced side effects like extreme fatigue, breathing problems, liver issues, or hair loss that led them to discontinue. Several members mentioned switching to biologics like Cimzia or Enbrel after methotrexate didn't work, while others found success combining methotrexate with medications like Celebrex or taking supplements like biotin and methylfolate to manage hair loss. A recurring theme was the importance of finding the right medication fit through trial and adjustment, with one member noting that eliminating sugar made a significant difference in reducing pain and swelling when medications alone weren't enough.

I had no luck with Methotrexate and now the I am on hydroxycloroquin as nothing as has been able to stop the RA to get it under control. But, I finally went sugar free and I can't tell you the difference it made in my hands and my knees for both pain and taking down the swelling. So I hope it will continue. Slowwalker

I'm on 15 mg of Methotrexate. The dr wants to increase it to 2- bc he said I'm not really on a therapeutic dose. I don't like taking pills - I used to have a glass of wine and that was my elixir to anything and everything !! ha ha Well, that certainly did not work well with RA . So far, I do not have issues with Methotrexate - my hair was collecting in the drain which freaked me out. I started taking 1000 of Biotin and Methylfolate and it really seems to have halted the progression of hair loss.

I've had liver issues with metho. So Dr. has taken that away. I continue with EnBREL shots once a week.
