Just another one of many questions in my head....i lnow not EVERYTHING will relate to RA but it doesnt hurt to ask even the oddest ones becuase one wont know till its asked. Last year i started having some crackling in my ear like water was in it. That went on for months and then finally went away. No ear infections with it, no sickness or colds. I have post nasal drip but have had it for years. Over time i started to lose my hearing. Since i dont have insurance i just dealt with it

Members responded to a question about hearing loss and ear issues in rheumatoid arthritis by confirming that RA can indeed affect hearing through inflammation of ear cartilage and joints, secondary SjΓΆgren's syndrome causing dryness, and medication side effects like NSAIDs worsening tinnitus. Several members shared personal experiences including crackling sounds, significant hearing loss (one member reported 50% loss in one ear), ringing in the ears, and dry eyes requiring treatment, with some noting early cataracts likely caused by prednisone. A recurring theme was the importance of getting RA under control to reduce inflammation in the ear area, ruling out ear wax buildup or infections, and understanding that anywhere there is cartilage or joints (including near the ears and TMJ) can be affected by RA.

RA causes hearing loss & eye problems. Get your eyes checked for cataracts. I developed cataracts in my early 40's.

Hi @A myRAteam Member. Very often secondary Sjogrens accompanies RA. It does for me and causes dry eye, dry mouth and other awful symptoms. I treat the symptoms. I also get sinusitis which can affect my ears. You may have a buildup of wax in your ear or an ear infection or Sjogren's can affect your salivary glands which run up into your ears can be the culprit. Anywhere you have a joint can be affected by RA and you have joints by your ears which could be inflammed so its important to get your RA under control. If it doesn't hurt but you can't hear I would suspect ear wax buildup blocking your hearing. Remember those with RA are immunosuppressed so we get infections that's a little harder to get rid of so we should go to the doctor for them. Have you tried warm moist compresses on your ears? Not too much water so it doesn't get in your ears since you have that concern. I hope you get relief.

I also have constant ringing in my ears. I went and had my ears checked because I couldn't hear at work. My hearing is okay and I don't need hearing aids for that. But get this, I was recommended to get hearing aids to block out the ringing in my ears.
I didn't, I just asked my customers to speak up. Lol.
I have had ringing in my ears since I was a kid. When I got older and went to concerts and then went to bars to hear live bands it got worse. Now it is really bad, I read on WebMD that NSAIDs cause tinnitus to get worse. So there you have it... RA indirectly causes ringing in the ears.
By the way, I have always told something easy the hard and long way. πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—
