Is there anything that they can do to control the pain other than steroids? I am on Arava, Skelaxin, Tramadol and Diclofenac and I have so much pain in my fingers but all they keep saying is more steroids. I do not want more steroids! They make it worse when coming off of them.

Members responded to a question about managing rheumatoid arthritis pain without relying on steroids, with many suggesting adding or switching to different disease-modifying medications like biologics, TNF inhibitors, Plaquenil, or methotrexate to better control inflammation at its source. Several members shared that pain management sometimes requires opioid medications like tramadol, oxycodone, or norco when other options fail, while others found relief through CBD oil, anti-inflammatory drugs like Celebrex or naproxen, or dietary changes such as eliminating gluten, processed foods, and alcohol while increasing greens and vegetables. A recurring theme was the need to work closely with a rheumatologist or pain clinic to find the right combination of treatments, as steroids alone are not a sustainable long-term solution and better options exist.

Hi Cindy,

Unfortunately the only thing that helps my pain is narcotic pain meds, n more unfortunate is that they're opioids.

I have RA in my wrists, finger and hand joints, plus Polymyositis, a muscle inflammation auto immune disorder in both legs. Even though I take Plaquenil, Methotrexate, Folic Acid n Enbrel, they help to keep the inflammation under control, but do nothing for the pain, only pain meds help. I go to a pain clinic.

Hopefully you're taking something for the pain.
If not, ask your Rhumy to refer you to a pain clinic, or maybe your PCP will prescribe you something.

It's the only way I can function even after taking all of those other meds.

I take ocycodone and Prednisone and it’s the only thing that helps with the pain. I didn’t want to take opioids but it’s the only thing that helps unfortunately. You just have to be extra diligent and only take prescribed dose.

CBD OIL is helping me tremendously. I was so impressed with this company and the CBD oil I became an affiliate and now sell it

Biologics or TNF inhibitors ?? Changed my life ... maybe a better anti inflammatory - celebrex? also maybe diet - I find eating a lot of greens (or green smoothie) and veg/raw always helps calm my pain within a week days and for me NO processed foods especially cutting gluten and wine and sometimes red meat also helps my pain. Maybe start to see what foods make it better or worse for you. Feel better soon.
