Does anyone have advice for how to stay comfortable during long (7+ hour) car rides? These are a regular part of our cross country road trips and I'm really struggling with them this year. Ideas??? (I do have to help with driving)
Like others have stated, stopping often to take quick breaks helps. I recently went on a 9 hour road trip with my boyfriend. I would drive as long as I could before we would stop to switch (i lasted 2 hours the first time). Instead of going through the drive-thru for food, we opted to go in to give my body a chance to take a break. It also helped that I took an OTC pain reliever every 4-6 hours, and when I wasn't driving, I would move my seat all the way back and lay it down so I had plenty of room to move/stretch my legs as best I could in the car.
Shortly after my diagnosis and before treatment other than Celebex was introduced, I went from Kansas to North Carolina. My husband wanted to push through in one long haul. We did have to stop and sleep in a rest stop, because I couldn't help with the driving. I rode with a pillow tucked under my knees to support my lower legs, little pillows under each elbow, and the seat reclined. When we did take a pit stop, I'd get out of the car and could barely move for a few minutes. Thankfully, between MTX and Humira I am so much better. I still use little pillows under my elbows. So pillows and the heated seats that Jill suggested, might be helpful.
Stopping and walking around at a rest stop often will help. I have found our heated seats make a huge difference. You can get a heating pad for the car if you don't have heated seats. Good, very adjustable car seats and room in the car are important, no very small cars or cheap seats if you can help it. At one time we had a full sized custom van, that was wonderful. The captains chairs reclined, you could lie down in the passengers seats.
Your lucky to have help. My bf doesn't drive so I have to drive everywhere we go. My advice is stopping every hour or so to get out and stretch. I was in a serious accident Labor Day weekend 2015 and I have to stop every hour or half hour to get out and stretch. My back was messed up in my acccidnt.
Sadly, I had my first flare this past year due to a 12 hour road trip. I was used to annual 12 hour road trips, sometimes even twice a year, so I couldn't understand what was wrong with me, but I thought I was going to die. I pushed through the pain several mos before I finally went to the dr and 7 mos later I received my diagnosis. Since then I've been on one road trip and the only thing that got me thru was to get out and stretch my legs every 3 hours and I also had to increase my daily dose of Prednisone till I got back home.
