Members rallied around someone denied SSDI after three months, with the overwhelming consensus being to hire a specialized disability attorney who works on contingency (capped at $6,000 from back pay) rather than navigating the notoriously difficult appeals process alone. Several members shared their own lengthy battles, with timelines ranging from immediate approval to three years of denials, and emphasized the importance of documenting every limitation in detail, being seropositive for RA markers, and having strong physician support letters to strengthen the case. A recurring theme was frustration with a system that routinely denies legitimate claims on the first attempt while others fraudulently receive benefits, coupled with deep empathy for the financial and emotional toll of being too sick to work yet unable to access desperately needed income.

Sheri, I'm sorry this is happening but it seems to be the norm now. I wish I had gotten a lawyer sooner. I've been fighting for almost 3 years. My recommendation is to get a lawyer. Their fee is set by the government, it's $6000 and if you don't get it they don't get paid. The fee comes out of the back pay you would receive. The office I was dealing with was so back logged that my case was sent to another state. It is very hard to go through this process. It is frustrating and it only makes our symptoms worse. I now have to go to a psychologist and another DDS doctor (again I already saw one about 2 years ago).

Hi @A myRAteam Member. I'm also trying to get ssdi benefits. I've been denied twice and am awaiting an appeal before a judge. My advice is make copies of all forms you fill out because every time you appeal the exact same paperwork has to be filled out again. It's is a frustrating process. I've been sent to see their psychiatrist.... Not even a regular medical doctor. But I'm "smart enough" to train or learn another job.Ha! I'd love to if that training supplied the strength to get through more than a 2hr stretch. Which is about all I can hold up to at one time. And just WHO would hire someone with that stamina!?!
