I went in to my Rheumy a month ago with hip pain in my upper right thigh on the side. She thought it was bursitis and gave me a cortisone shot. Now the pain is in both sides but mostly on the left. The pain has gotten so bad that I can barely walk (can make it to bathroom to kitchen but not much more without wanting to throw up oe cry from pain). I'm calling my Rheumy back today to try to figure something out, but I was wondering if anyone else has had something similar. The pain is… read more

She did prescribe physical therapy. I start on Monday. I also got a cortisone shot, and that has helped as well. Hoping we can tackle this and move on soon!

I wonder if a referral to a physical therapist might be helpful.

Oh yes! I have the exact same pain. It can be excruciating. I have it mostly on my left side in the exact same place you mentioned. I was told it was bursitis brought on by the RA. I have been given several cortisone injections, which didn't help. Not sure what the doctor wants to do next.

Oh my...yes!! What initially got me to my RD diagnosis was anemia and hip pain that did not respond to typical bursitis treatment. A big help to me was massage...the pain caused all the muscles to tighten up, and regular massage helped keep them loose, along with walking and yoga/stretching. Also, I recently was treated for spondolisthesis (a misaligned vertebrae), and had spinal fusion surgery. The surgeon told me to expect relief in my hips, but I was skeptical....darn it! He was right! :-) It's not perfect, but it's better. My suggestion is to have your rheumy refer you to a back specialist to look for any issues that might affect those hips. And go get a massage!
