Has anyone had a flare so bad that it woke you out of sleep, caused you to vomit, and ended in a trip to the ER
I have had my RA dx since July 2015 and have had what I believed to be "flares" - pain in a joint that gradually increases, includes swelling and warmth, and after several hours, little to no mobility in the joint whatsoever, without stabbing pain. It typically subsides within 48-72 hours, as if it never happened. However, the other day my wrist began to "flare" and became painful and… read more

Members shared their experiences with RA flares so severe they caused vomiting and considered or visited the ER, with many describing how intense pain triggers nausea and the frustration of emergency rooms sometimes offering limited relief beyond steroids and strong pain medications. Several members offered practical strategies including keeping oral prednisone at home for emergencies, using ice packs or heat with rest in a dark room, and working closely with a rheumatologist to adjust medications when flares become unmanageable. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of suffering through these attacks, the shared understanding that comes from connecting with others who truly know what it's like, and the importance of advocating for yourself when current treatments are no longer providing adequate control.

That sounds terrible. Sounds like it's time to get different meds. If you're still having that much pain and suffering, your current meds are probably not working sufficiently.

So Sorry! wrote my answer before reading the whole of your Christmas experience. Goodness, so the hospital really was not much help after all? Just more strange drugs. Have you ever tried just knocking yourself out ( with, dare I say? a sleeping tablet of light analgesic & lot's of deep heat or ice packs) & a dark room with some beautiful soothing music? Only a suggestion. I really do know what you are going through. It is not easy. Brings me to tears & to throwing up on a regular basis. This website where you can honestly express your pain & your feelings, also helps more than you can realise. We are ALL going through the same & it is only from others experience & knowledge can we possibly help ourselves & others.
I wish you peace & happiness & future days full of wonderful sounds of laughter!!

Have often thought about going to the ER during a bad" flare" or" attack" I call them. But as you say, these flares are normal for us, almost, & do pass. We just need to cope with that time in between< that's the tough time. Not sure if here in Australia, or Melbourne, they take patients for arthritis flare-ups? do they?
