Members shared mixed experiences and confusion about working while applying for disability, with several emphasizing that you generally cannot work or must be off work for six months before approval, though some noted you can earn around $1,060 per month after being approved without losing benefits. Many members clarified the important differences between SSI (based on household income), SSDI (based on lifetime earnings), and regular Social Security retirement, noting you typically cannot receive both SSDI and retirement benefits simultaneously, and that SSDI becomes taxable depending on total household income. A recurring theme was the complexity and frustration of navigating the system, with strong advice to ask detailed questions directly to Social Security representatives, work with a disability lawyer, and understand that attempting to work during the application can actually demonstrate your inability to sustain employment.

SSI (Social Security) is based on your income. When I applied for SSI last Fall they turned me down for SSI because my wife made to much money. But, I did receive Federal Disability after 6 months with no pay. At that point, I started receiving just over $1600.00 a month. Since it is taxable so I had them withhold taxes for me. ( I think it is only for federal taxes and not state taxes.). So, my take home pay isjust under $1300.00. (About 1/4th of what I made while working at my job. However, my Rhumatoid doctor said I couldn't work at all. However, I can make about $1064.00 over the disability per month.

When I get older (im 59 if anyone cares) lol. When I become old enough to get SSJ, I will start getting it but I won't receive both Disability and SSI. Can only get one. My SSI might be more or less or more of the disability. It is based on how much you made in the last 16 (I think) months of your working time. But apparently you cannot recieve SSI and Disability at the same rime. I hope that helps. If anyone is told by a Social Security employee that works in this area. Please let me, because I was informed that a person cannot recurve both. (If SS even exists after this next election for President. The Lord only knows.)

It is better if you try to work while applying then if you can't do it you are showing your inability to work which is why you are applying for disability in the first place.

I worked as a paralegal for an attorney that did SSD. SSI is based on the income of the household, while SSD is based on your lifetime earnings. Depending on what your wife's income is why your income would be taxable. I am a widow so my SSD is technically taxable I don't make enough to have to pay taxes on it. You cannot receive SS retirement and SSD and what usually happens is tat the come out to be the same monthly amount. After 2 years on SSD you become eligible for Medicare which can either be helpful if you have expensive health insurance. SS is very difficult to deal with and the best thing you can do is ask a million questions and be very clear about what you ask. Good Luck
You can work while on SSD but only for minimal amounts. I would suggest you contact SSA about all that because it has changed since I was practicing.
