TORN/SPLIT CUTICLES One of the more annoying and sharply painful symptoms I experience with RD is torn/split cuticles. At one time, I went to have my nails professionally manicured and acrylic/gel nails put on (no sanding!) This helped, until I retired and no longer had the "luxury money". So, the splitting and tearing came back with a vengeance. Here are a couple of things I found that work for me. I'm wondering what other solutions/ideas there are?

1. There is this liquid "band-aid"… read more

Members shared creative and practical solutions for managing torn and split cuticles caused by rheumatoid arthritis, with many expressing relief at finally understanding this symptom was connected to their condition. Several members recommended moisture-rich treatments including Burt's Bees cuticle cream, coconut oil overnight with cotton gloves, Aquaphor, and lavender essential oil, while others swore by liquid bandage products like New Skin or even household craft glue and superglue to seal splits and stop the sharp pain immediately. A recurring theme was the emotional and physical benefit of regular manicures or pedicures as both self-care and practical management, with members encouraging each other to find affordable options like at-home kits or viewing professional nail care as an important investment in mental health and dignity while living with a chronic illness.

I worked as a nail technician for a few years so I figured I'd offer my tricks :)

1. Keeping a thick layer of Aquaphor on them over night and apply it often during the day. This will mostly help to prevent it from getting worse! It can also help with healing process.

2. Coconut oil! The more moisture you can give these areas the better, especially if the cause is that your RD and/or meds are making your skin dryer??

3. Clipping cuticles or biting them off makes them come back worse. It makes your body think you need more (same with bottom of heel if you do too much sanding, etc.)

I was a cosmatolagist, trim cuticle and rub oil into daily. Oliver is good.

Coconut oil can be used for any skin issues! You can even use it as a mouth wash and it whitens your teeth :)

I am another who didn't realize these were RA issues! I have had very thin nails as far back as I can remember. They use to peal off in layers but now I just have a couple that want to split lengthwise and you can easily see white lines runnung that direction. To help protect my nails I just use a coat or two of clear nail polish, (Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails) and trim any torn or split cuticles as soon as it happens so I'm not tempted to pick at it making it worse and more painful.

I have the same issue with my cuticles, they peel so bad I just clip the skin off. I will try a new approach, thanks for the feedback. Be blessed everyone.
