Members shared experiences with severe neck pain related to rheumatoid arthritis, with many describing instability, stiffness, numbness, and debilitating headaches or migraines caused by vertebrae erosion, pinched nerves, and muscle tension from the neck working harder to support the head. Several members found relief through physical therapy exercises, dry needling, acupuncture, ice therapy, heat avoidance, specialized pillows, and medications like Savella for fibromyalgia, while strongly emphasizing the importance of getting cervical X-rays or MRIs before any neck manipulation to rule out dangerous cervical instability. A recurring theme was advocating firmly with rheumatologists and neurologists for proper imaging and pain management referrals, as untreated RA in the neck can lead to serious complications including slipped discs requiring fusion surgery or even temporary paralysis and incontinence.

I have pain in my neck, cannot turn just my neck to look at anything as it hurts to much.
Also I am clenching jaw and grinding teeth at night.
Does anyone else get this?
My rheumatologist never really asks questions..
Two toes on my left foot are often numb with very little feeling.

Oh, I meant to tell you, if you get sick with the heat, It usually indicates nerve damage also. Or so they told me.

So sorry @A myRAteam Member. I have a stiff neck and numbness. The rheumatologist sent me to neurology because of the numbness and pain in the neck and shoulder area. He has ruled out other autoimmune such as MS and Lupus. We are looking at fibromyalgia that they gave me a Rx for and it's helping with the constant pain and numbness. Hugs to you, hope you feel better and find relief.

I have debilitating neck pain, has even left me where I couldn't walk and was incontinent one night. I worked in a nursing home and of course at the time did not know that I had RA, I did hurt my neck there, c2,3,4, and went and tried there pathetic therapy. Heat is a no no, and the the therapist found that out quickly once I became sick on her pretty white shoes. Believe it or not, and I'm not recommending it, I have my hubby to do one thing the therapist did, and it works. If he is not around then I have to sit, neck down, fetal position until he gets home to hopefully help. Of course the docs just treat it along with the RA, with pain meds. I have also had MRI's, the x-rays didn't show too much.

I have and I lay down and ice it. Try not to wait until you can bare the pain once you start feeling that pain coming in ice it.
