Members shared their experiences with joint deformities caused by rheumatoid arthritis, describing symptoms that included fingers turning sideways, knuckles swelling into sausage-like shapes, toes crossing over each other, and joints locking or freezing in certain positions, often preceded by clicking, numbness, tingling, and gradual loss of range of motion. Several members offered practical advice and encouragement, including cortisone shots for locked fingers, nerve testing to rule out neuropathy, working with a skilled rheumatologist to find the right medication to stop joint damage, and using humor and support to cope with the emotional toll of visible deformities. A recurring theme was the importance of paying attention to early warning signs, advocating for proper treatment, and leaning on the community for understanding and solidarity during difficult days.

Go to a very good neurologist. Get a nerve test. I did and found out it is neuropathy. According to her the only med to take is a seizure med. as for the deformity--my sister has that in her spine. That is common. You may not be on the right med for RA to stop joint damage. Make sure you have a great RA doc. I don't think my sister's doc is very good because he has never tried any optional meds. I don't think hers is working. She has a lot of deformity in joints and getting worse.

@Deformity, I have deformity in my toes, which actually was my first clue I had RA. Started out as random numbness and tingling. I'm on my feet 10+ hours at work daily, so I put down the pain to that. Even when my toes started crossing over each other, I thought it was work related. Wish I'd been more in tune with my body when it all started... Surgery in 3 weeks.
