That's a frustrating and uncomfortable spot to deal with! Pain in the buttock area can actually be connected to rheumatoid arthritis in a few ways.
RA causes widespread inflammation that can affect joints and surrounding tissues throughout the body — not just the hands and knees. This inflammation can irritate nerves and soft tissues in the lower back, hips, and buttock region.
Some possible RA-related reasons for buttock pain include:
- Hip joint inflammation — RA can affect the hip joint, which may radiate pain into the buttock area
- Tailbone (coccyx) involvement — RA-related inflammation near the base of the spine can cause pain that spreads to the surrounding area
- Bursitis — Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs near the hip or buttock joints is a known complication of RA
- Nerve irritation — Inflammation in the lower spine from RA can press on nerves, causing pain that travels into the buttock
It's really important to bring this up with your rheumatologist, especially if the pain is new, worsening, or affecting your daily life. They can help pinpoint the exact cause and adjust your treatment plan if needed.

Can Rheumatoid Arthritis Cause Tailbone Pain?

Thank you for this information. I have bursitis in my hip which is now evidently arthritis, my lower back (making me walk like a duck) and all over. Unfortuneately, my shoulder and elbow are so bad, I have had to give up writing with pen or pencil, and can only type for short times. This is a horrible disease. I can't get the meds I need, as I need to be free of infection or viruses....and of course, I get them all of the time without medication. Now it feels like COVID again with isolation. Oh the joys!!!
