One myRAteam member shared that in the beginning they thought they felt worse the day after taking methotrexate, but after about six months, that problem went away entirely. Another myRAteam member said they'd been on it for three months with hardly any flares and felt more like their old self. For those who do experience side effects, there are some helpful strategies to reduce them:
- Taking methotrexate after a meal
- Scheduling your dose on a Friday or Saturday to recover over the weekend
- Taking a folic acid (folate) supplement
- Using other medications to manage nausea
Everyone's experience is different, so it's worth giving it some time. If side effects do become a problem, a rheumatologist can help adjust the approach to make it more manageable.
