What an anxious time — waiting for test results is never easy. It's completely understandable to want to know more about what's happening in your body right now.

Rheumatoid nodules can indeed develop in places beyond the joints, including in the lungs. These are inflammatory bumps made up of fibrous tissue, and they're actually a known feature of RA itself. There are a couple of reasons nodules can appear in the lungs with RA:

- RA itself — the chronic inflammation that drives RA can cause nodules to form in lung tissue
- Methotrexate — if this is part of your treatment, it's associated with a side effect called accelerated nodulosis, where nodules can develop or grow quickly

One myRAteam member noticed nodules on their fingers had grown larger while on methotrexate. Testing confirmed the medication was the cause, and after stopping it, the nodules began to go away.

It's really important not to stop or change any medication without speaking to your rheumatologist first, even if you suspect it may be the cause. Your respiratory doctor and rheumatologist will need to work together to find the best path forward for you.

I have preventative lung screening CT every other year. I'm also a pulmonary patient. I had a small nodule in my lung. So they waited 2 months and did another CT and it was gone. They said it could have been a little pneumonia or a nodule from inflammation. My husband had COPD and emphazema. They found a nodule in there. It didn't go away so they went in to look at it with a scope and it wasn't cancerous.
My doctor said they had to watch closely because I'm a former smoker with RA. Good luck I hope it's nothing dangerous. 🙏🙏

Was diagnosed with RA in 2008 and on Methotrexate for a while. Affected my liver. A cocktail of different medication over the years.
Now on Humira injections.
