The SetPoint System is a pretty exciting and brand-new option for RA — it only recently received FDA approval, so personal experiences from the RA community are still emerging. It may be a little early to hear widespread firsthand accounts just yet!
Here's what is known about it so far:
- It's a small implantable device (about the size of a vitamin tablet) placed on the vagus nerve in the neck
- It delivers 60 seconds of gentle electrical stimulation once per day to help reduce inflammation
- It's designed for adults with moderate-to-severe RA who haven't responded well to biologics or JAK inhibitors Clinical trial results were encouraging. In a trial of 242 people with RA:
- Nearly half achieved low disease activity or remission after 12 months
- 75% were able to stay off a biologic or advanced medication for a full year
- The most common side effect was hoarseness (about 5% of participants)
- Serious side effects occurred in under 2% of participants, mostly related to the implant site
SetPoint Medical plans to roll out the device in select U.S. cities in 2025, with wider availability in 2026. It's worth bringing up with a rheumatologist to see if it might be a good fit!
