I am debating getting a lightweight, folding, electric wheelchair for use on vacations, work conferences, etc. where lots of walking occurs. I have fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, and peripheral neuropathy in addition to the RA. I am not ready to give up on doing things but just can't do the walking/standing I used to do. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

First, it's wonderful that you're finding ways to stay active and keep doing the things you love — that mindset is everything! While specific wheelchair brand recommendations aren't something that can be provided here, there are some helpful ways to find the right fit.

Consider consulting with:

- Your rheumatologist — they can provide a referral or prescription, which may help with insurance coverage
- An occupational therapist — they specialize in helping people with RA find the right mobility aids and adaptive equipment for their lifestyle
- A physical therapist — they can assess your specific mobility needs

When evaluating options, think about:

- Weight and portability (especially for travel and fitting in car trunks)
- Battery life for full conference or vacation days
- Ease of folding and unfolding independently
- Airline and venue compatibility Many myRAteam members have found that embracing mobility aids — even when hesitant at first — actually allowed them to do *more* of their normal activities, not less. One myRAteam member shared that after initially worrying about perception, using a mobility aid helped them return to activities they loved.

Getting a professional assessment ensures the chair suits your specific needs safely and comfortably.
