Yes, it's more common than you might think to have both rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia together.

While only about 5 percent of the general population has fibromyalgia, this number jumps to approximately 20 percent in people who have RA. Studies show that between 7.4 percent and 19.8 percent of people with RA also meet the criteria for a fibromyalgia diagnosis.

Simply having a diagnosis of RA seems to increase the chances of also being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Being female with rheumatoid arthritis makes this even more likely.

As a myRAteam member shared: "The fibromyalgia and RA combination is difficult. I have trouble figuring out which symptoms belong to which issue."

The relationship between these two conditions isn't fully understood, but some researchers suggest that increased inflammation from RA may lead to the hypersensitivity in the nervous system that drives fibromyalgia pain. This can make managing both conditions challenging, but understanding that they often occur together can help you and your healthcare team develop the right treatment approach.
