I recently began taking methotrexate. How long will it take to see positive reduction in symptoms of RA and Sjogrens disease?

Members shared their experiences with methotrexate for RA and Sjogrens, with most reporting it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to feel relief, and some finding it necessary to add a biologic like Humira, Enbrel, or Cimzia when methotrexate alone wasn't enough. Several members offered practical strategies for managing Sjogrens dryness symptoms, including Cevimeline saliva pills, Biotene mouth spray and rinse, Act sugar free lozenges, Xylimelts, and Prevident toothpaste. A recurring theme was the importance of patience and persistence, as medications need time to build up in the system, and finding the right combination often requires experimentation and self-advocacy.

Bonds, my dentist also prescribed Prevident toothpaste for dry mouth. Also, the dentist recommended Act sugar free dry mouth lozenges and Xylimelts.

I use a spray to combat dry mouth and it works well for me. It last for a while.

Sicca symptoms are the dryness symptoms of Sjogrens.

@A myRAteam Member I take a biologic called Enbrel and it was month 4 before I felt any relief so if your Humira works slowly, like Enbrel does, keep the Faith! It may just take a while before you feel better! I think maybe the drug has to build up in our systems.

Pam I only took methotrexate for RA. Is it also for your Sjorgens? I took it for weeks, felt effects after a few but it seemed to gradually stop working. Rather then up it I switched. I have a history of meds working and stopping out of the blue. I believe it's my body's response and certainly not others. Hang in there. These things need their time to build up even before starting to work. Try to think of it as working building up... rather then not being effective. 💛
