I had similar in my elbow and it was extremly painful to move. My dr referred me for a cortisone injection and to drain some fluid at the same time. Omg the result was amazing. Pretty much instant relief, and have never had a problem with it again in about 2 years. Im sure it was the fact they drained that bit of fluid out was the key. I would imagine a similar situation could happen with the knee.

How can you find relief from knee swelling with rheumatoid arthritis?

Managing knee effusion (swelling) with RA involves several approaches that can help reduce inflammation and pain.

Medications

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate and biologic DMARDs such as Enbrel or Humira can reduce immune system response, decreasing inflammation and relieving pain. Over-the-counter options like naproxen, acetaminophen, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen may also help manage symptoms. Always talk to your doctor about the right dosage and frequency.

RICE Method

Following the RICE principles can be very effective:
- Rest your knee and reduce physical activity
- Ice the affected area for 10-20 minutes using an ice pack wrapped in a dishcloth
- Compression with bandages, wraps, sleeves, or braces to support the joint
- Elevation by propping up your leg, especially at night

Home Remedies

A myRAteam member shared: "Ice is your best friend. Try a polar ice unit - fill with ice and a little water, wrap around your knee, elevate, and relax for about a half hour."

Other members have found relief with Biofreeze or warm compresses using a heating pad.

Medical Intervention

Your doctor may drain the fluid from your knee and analyze it to determine the best treatment approach.
