What is brain fog with rheumatoid arthritis?

Brain fog is a common symptom of RA that causes difficulty with memory, concentration, and thinking clearly. Studies show that 31-71% of people with RA experience some form of cognitive impairment.

Common symptoms include:

* Forgetfulness and confusion
* Trouble concentrating or thinking
* Difficulty finding the right words or slurred speech
* Fatigue and spacing out
* Problems retaining information

As a myRAteam member shared, "Brain fog is the pits! I feel like I look like a complete idiot when I lose all train of what I was thinking, but it happens." What causes brain fog in RA?

Several factors contribute to brain fog:

* Inflammation: Chronic inflammation activates immune cells that release proteins called cytokines in the brain, which can alter neurotransmitter function and cause fatigue and cognitive changes
* Anxiety and depression: Chronic pain from RA can lead to mental health challenges that affect cognitive performance
* Medications: Corticosteroids have been linked to cognitive difficulties in people with RA
* Heart disease risk factors: These may increase likelihood of brain fog, though the exact connection isn't fully understood Tips for managing brain fog:

* Use memory aids like calendars, notes, and phone reminders for appointments and medications
* Develop a consistent bedtime routine for better sleep quality
* Practice meditation, mindfulness, or yoga to improve emotional well-being
* Take breaks and rest when feeling overwhelmed
* Avoid situations that trigger RA pain
* Play word games and brain teasers to keep your mind sharp
* Talk to your doctor about your treatment plan, especially if medications might be contributing

If you experience sudden cognitive changes, contact your doctor right away.

I suffer with terrible brain fog. I spoke to my neurologist and she agreed to let me try low dose Ritalin on the days when it’s at its worst. It does help but I still find myself unable to remember little details and losing track in the middle of conversations.
