Ever Experienced Extreme Pain Due To Temperature Drop

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Council Bluffs, IA

The past two days there has been an extreme temperature drop as we've gone from having 70s in the morning to low 40s. What I'm experiencing is having pain in my hands and that is something very new as it's never happened before. Has anyone ever had an issue with experiencing an extreme pain level like this before when the weather has this kind of drop?

Sue, the change in barometric pressures have been my main enemy with flares and fast onset pain. I also live with a heating pad. I found that I can't let my house get to cold because it hurts my bones.

Hi Sue, I definitely notice the weather change. I use heat pads a lot to help and also I have a brace I use on my hands that help a lot.

Hi Sue, when the cold wet weather sets in I definitely feel it. I pull out the heated throw blanket 🤗

Many people with rheumatoid arthritis report increased pain and stiffness when the weather changes, particularly with drops in temperature. Here are some insights from my knowledge base:

- Barometric Pressure: Changes in barometric pressure, often associated with cold, wet weather, can increase pain levels. Low pressure allows tissues around the joints to expand, putting pressure on the joints and increasing pain.
- Personal Experience: Individuals like Charlene G. and Heather S. have noted that their pain levels correlate with weather changes. Charlene even uses an interactive Aches & Pains weather map to plan her day.
- Research Findings: Studies have shown mixed results, but personal experiences are crucial. For instance, some data showed pain levels fluctuating with temperature changes, though the results were not always consistent.

If this is a new experience for you, it might be helpful to:
- Monitor Weather Patterns: Use tools like the Aches & Pains weather map to anticipate changes.
- Adjust Medications: Consult your doctor about possibly adjusting your medication during these periods.
- Use Compression Gloves: Some people find relief using compression gloves to keep their hands warm and reduce pain.

Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
