Swallowing difficulties, also known as dysphagia, can sometimes be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) due to inflammation or damage in the muscles and nerves involved in swallowing. Here are some key points to consider:
- Symptoms: Coughing or choking during or after eating, gurgling sounds from the throat, throat clearing after drinking or swallowing, slow chewing or eating, and coughing food back up.
- When to Contact a Medical Professional: If swallowing problems do not improve after a few days, or if they come and go. Immediate contact is necessary if you have a fever, shortness of breath, weight loss, worsening swallowing problems, coughing or vomiting blood, worsening asthma, or feel as if you are choking during or after eating or drinking.
If these symptoms persist, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
