Members discussed concerns about turmeric supplementation potentially causing autoimmune hepatitis after one member experienced elevated liver enzymes (AST and ALT) while taking 500 mg daily for nine months and was asked by their GI doctor to stop. Several members emphasized the importance of only taking supplements approved by a rheumatologist, shared that medications like methotrexate, sinus medicine, and even thyroid conditions can affect liver enzymes, and noted that turmeric may interfere with certain medications like Lyrica. A recurring theme was the unpredictability of RA affecting major organs, the need for caution with supplements despite their natural appeal, and community support as members waited for diagnostic bloodwork while managing the complex realities of living with chronic illness.

I cannot take tumeric because it blocks the effects of my Lyrica. I've never heard of autoimmune hepatitis. Have they diagnosed you with this?

Hi Debra, no I haven’t been diagnosed with Autoimmune hepatitis yet. I think I said I will have a blood test in a couple of weeks. My primary doctor didn’t have any problems with me taking Turmeric but my GI asked me to stop which I did. Just to clarify most people think if a person has liver problems they must be an alcoholic, well I don’t drink😊.

Were you diagnosed with that? And we're you taking tumeric on your own or did your Dr tell you to take it?

I only take the supplements that my RA Dr tells me to take and they're specifically for me. Some supplements can cause more harm than good depending on diagnosis(s), medication etc.

There is growing evidence that turmeric can induce severe liver injury. Due to this and the analytical normalization after the suspension of immunosuppressive treatment we conclude that the most probable diagnosis for our patient is DI-AIH.
Autoimmune hepatitis is when your body's infection-fighting system (immune system) attacks your liver cells. It is a long-term chronic liver disease that causes inflammation and liver damage. Experts don't know what causes it, but it is more likely to appear in people living with other autoimmune conditions.

Nellie, I just remembered... If is "If you have thyroiditis (my hubby's is LOW thyroid) do NOT take Turmeric nor Ginger supplements". Just went and listened while waiting to see the Chiropractor at our Practice!
