Methotrexate

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Greenville, MI

I started taking methotrexate last Friday (2/17) and I wondered if others feel a little rougher on day 2 post-meds more than day 1? This has been the case for me both last week and this week. Curious to hear others' experiences.

Members shared widely varying experiences with methotrexate timing and side effects, with many confirming that day two after taking the medication often feels worse than day one, bringing increased fatigue, nausea, headaches, and an overall sense of feeling rough or sluggish. Several members offered practical strategies that helped them manage side effects, including taking the medication at night, splitting doses throughout the day, adding daily folic acid, keeping ginger ale on hand for nausea, and in some cases reducing the dose or switching to injections to minimize stomach upset. A recurring theme was the initial adjustment period being the hardest, with some members finding relief after a few weeks or months, while others ultimately discontinued methotrexate due to severe fatigue, nausea, or lack of improvement, often transitioning to biologics or combination therapies for better symptom control.

I did not do well with methotrexate. The side effects were challenging- extreme fatigue, no energy, depression, weight gain. I no longer use this med.

Hello, When I first started on methotrexate, I felt horrible the day after. I did not make any plans for that day so I could be a couch potato. It did eventually get better, but I really dreaded taking it at first. My doctor had me split it up on the day I take it. I take 5 in the afternoon and the other five before I go to bed. It seemed to have helped. Good luck to you! Tammie :)

I took this for a very short period, it made me so sick. I was so tired, I didn't have any energy to just get out of bed. Wherever I took the shot, would swell up. This medication, was really bad for me.
