I have been recently asked to try methotrexate or humira .. can anyone give me any advice? I’m worried about side effects. Pill form? Shot? Any info would be great!

Members shared deeply personal experiences with methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, with many calling it a miracle drug that significantly reduced pain and swelling, particularly when paired with daily folic acid to prevent side effects like nausea and hair loss. Several members reported success with both pill and injection forms, noting that injections often work better for those with stomach issues, while others described challenges including persistent fatigue, hair thinning, and rare cases where the medication simply didn't work or caused adverse reactions that required switching to biologics like Humira, Enbrel, or Xeljanz. A recurring theme was the importance of patience, as methotrexate can take several months to show improvement, open communication with your rheumatologist about any concerns, and the reassurance that it's normal to try different medications until you find what works best for your body.

Now on methotrexate injections. Medication has helped tremendously. Also take folate, but NOT on the day I give myself the shot. No hair loss... maybe got some curls now...

I have been on Methotrexate pills weekly since June. Helped me regain use of my hands by decreasing swelling and pain. A little hair thinning initially, but not now. I also take Folic acid daily, so no other side effects.

I started on a imuran for 20 years, then went straight to Humira(b/c of my age they just thought to band aid the symptoms without the RA diagnosis, come to find out I’ve had this my whole life). No significant side effects for me with Humira. If you can avoid the methotrexate, I would.
