What Do You Do When You Reach Medicare And They Don’t Cover Your Biologiic Enbrel

Going into Medicare and have been on Enbrel for 10 yrs. It works better then anything else I’ve tried. But now I can’t afford the medication because it’s so costly. And Medicare wont help.
Does anyone know of an alternative or have similar problem?

Members rallied around someone facing the difficult transition to Medicare and the loss of affordable access to Enbrel after 10 years of successful treatment, with many sharing their own experiences navigating similar insurance challenges and offering practical solutions. Several members recommended contacting Enbrel directly through their patient support programs or the Amgen Safety Net Foundation, switching to alternative biologics like Cimzia, Remicade, or Orencia that may be covered under Medicare Part B with lower or no copays, and working with their rheumatologist to appeal insurance decisions or explore supplemental plans like AARP United Healthcare. A recurring theme was the importance of persistence and advocacy, with members emphasizing that pharmaceutical assistance programs exist beyond poverty-level eligibility, that doctors can help navigate coverage options, and that switching biologics can sometimes lead to even better results with better insurance coverage.

I am on Medicare. There are a number of biologics covered under Medicare part B. That is traditional Medicare not Medicare advantage. I just started Orencia infusions and there is no charge except for the annual deductible (this year a one time charge of $262). If I got Orencia subcutaneous shots at home my part D copay would be $350 a month. Embrel part D copay is around $500 a month. I read that Medicare part B will cover Embrel shots given at home. There is no IV version of Embrel. Other TNF inhibitors like Embrel that are IV and covered under part B for in office infusion are Cimzia and Remicade. I hope this helps. If what I read is correct, you will be able to get Embrel free except for the annual deductible (which you pay anyway for the first doc visit(s) of the year) but you will need to sign up for traditional Medicare. I don't know the rules for Medicare advantage plans.

I am on Medicare and on Remicade. You have to have been on a lot of biologics before insurance will approve Remicade. Medicare has approved all of my biologics. You may have to switch to a different one. I realize it is a little scary for you. Enbrel is considered a basic biologic so moving to a different one will be a step up and probably WORK REALLY WELL FOR YOU. PLEASE EXCUSE MY ALL CAPS MY KEYBOARD GETS STUCK.

Hi there, im not on medicare, and I know that changes the programs Enbrel offers to help with paying, but I would call their support line (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators), and see what they say!

You can have your Dr call into your insurance and tell them the enbrel is the only thing you can take right now. It's an appeal to their decision
and considered an emergency drug which your insurance is obligated to cover.

Contact the pharmaceutical company. Most have programs that either reduce or eliminate your cost. Your rheumy should be able to get you started with this. I have also used GoodRX and gotten a reasonable price. Best of luck to you.
