Members rallied around someone overwhelmed by mounting medical bills after depleting their savings, offering a wealth of practical guidance on managing costs and accessing coverage. Several members recommended negotiating bills down to as little as $10 per month to avoid collections, exploring state Medicaid programs after assets are spent, switching to Medicare Advantage plans for better coverage, working with a specialized attorney to appeal denied disability claims (noting they typically take 33% of retroactive benefits), and researching teaching hospitals with research departments that may offer free treatment. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of losing independence and financial security due to chronic illness, met with fierce encouragement to keep advocating, explore all available resources, and remember that help exists even when the path forward feels impossible.

Bless your heart. Do you have any insurance? Are you able to get disability and Medicare? If so, look into a Medicare Advantage Plan as they tend to pay more than straight Medicare.
As for the existing bills, negotiate them down, even $10.00 per month will keep them at bay. There are different groups through churches that maybe able to help you. Also, since you have used up your savings check your State programs to see what insurance is available through them.
If you do have insurance and these are the noncovered items, ask them if they have a patient advocate to help you sort all of this out.
If you do not have insurance, for future treatment check to see if you have a teaching hospital, with an RA research department, they can offer treatment, meds, etc. Free of charge.
I hope this helps.

Bless your heart. This can be overwhelming for sure, but there are solutions. Start by asking your Rheumatologist insurance person, which plan gives the best coverage. Then you can go to that company's website and see who their other providers are and what plans are available through them. The biggest thing is to keep your current bills out of collection, so again a note to them and $10.00 per month should take care of that.
As for your denied disability, find an attorney who specializes in social security disability. They typically ask for 33% of your lump sum for the retroactive portion. This fee is negotiable.
If like most of us, you find you really cannot live on your monthly social security know that you can work part time and now with so many flexible telephone jobs from home you have a lot to select from.
My daughter currently does this for the state. Social Security does have limits on income before you have to start paying into it again, so check those amounts out on their website.
I hope this helps get you started. Feel free to reach out any time.
