Drug Side Effects

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I wonder how many of us are sensitive to medication. I know I am. Just curious about this and the connection to RA; or if there is a connection. Do you feel you get more side effects than most people?

Members deeply connected over their heightened sensitivity to RA medications, with many describing how drugs that work well for one person can cause severe side effects in another, turning treatment into an exhausting trial-and-error process. Several members shared practical strategies, including switching methotrexate from weekend to weekday dosing to preserve quality time, moving from pills to injections to reduce nausea, using sunscreen and protective clothing for newfound sun sensitivity, and advocating firmly with doctors when side effects become unbearable. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, trusting your own body over blanket medical advice, and supporting treatment with good nutrition while remembering that finding the right medication often requires patience and persistence.

All medicines have side effects and each of us is different. Trial and error seems to be the only way to truly figure out what works and what doesn't, but many meds also seem to stop helping after a while, so please support you body and immune system with a good diet for you and supplement where necessary.

Yes, we become more sensitive to the meds and the Sun, for sure. My daughter bought a screen for my side of the car, to keep the Sun out. If I plan to be outside, I use sunscreen, wear a hat and clothing that reflects the Sun.
I hope this helps!

It is so weird...what works for one won't work for another. Humira did nothing for me, the IV meds did nothing, plaquenil made me sick. Now I am on xel janz, lefludimide and gabapentin for fibromyalgia. These work fair, however, I am getting to the point where my choices are limited. I will see ortho about a knee replacement next week. I hope he says its ok. This knee is so very painful. But I am very hopeful for us all that we can find what works!☺️

I took Methotrexate, and struggled weekly for a day or 2. I am now on Humira and Plaquenil and have little to no side effects.

When I was diagnosed with RA I was only allergic to 2 meds, now the list is long. Unfortunately, because we all react differently to RA and the meds we take it makes it more challenging for the Researchers looking for a cure.

Be careful of rashes as well, if they come along with a burning sensation let your doctor know right away as this can be very serious.
If your Rheumatologist is not communicating well you may need to find another one.
Communicating is key to your treatment.
