Members strongly related to experiencing swelling on the outside of their ankles, with many describing accompanying weakness, pain, and the frightening sensation of their legs or knees suddenly giving out, especially on stairs. Several members shared practical relief strategies including ice packs, elevation, compression socks, Epsom salt soaks, algesal cream, wearing larger shoes to accommodate swelling, and in more severe cases, fluid drainage procedures and corticosteroid injections that provided dramatic improvement. A recurring theme was the unpredictable nature of RA symptoms moving between joints without warning, the importance of holding onto handrails and using canes when needed, and the value of staying proactive with physical therapy and medication adjustments while remaining gentle with oneself through the challenges.

Swelling on the outside of the ankle can be due to several reasons, including:

- Ankle sprain: This is an injury to the ligaments, often caused by twisting the ankle inward, leading to small tears in the ligaments. This can cause swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight on the joint.

If the swelling does not go down within 2 to 3 days, or if you have symptoms of infection, increased pain, or a fever, it is important to contact your healthcare provider.

Dianne, if you were talking to me, thank you. No worries, that was a few days ago. Now my right hand is red, warm and swollen. My joints like to take turns. 😉 Lol I do use compression sleeves and ice on my various joints. Seriously, thank you for your concern. Have a wonderful weekend. Be gentle with yourself. Lori

So sorry to see you having a hard time. You should soak your leg and elevated it and warp until you see rheumatologist. Try to have a good night sleep 😴.
