Many community members responded to concerns about stomach burning and acid reflux from Hydroxychloroquine by sharing their own experiences with protective medications like omeprazole, lansoprazole, and Nexium, which help shield the stomach lining from the harsh effects of arthritis drugs. Several members described how initial stomach upset often resolves after a few weeks, and emphasized the importance of always taking the medication with food and considering over-the-counter options like Pepcid or Tums for added relief. A recurring theme was frustration when doctors dismiss symptoms, with one member confirming that stopping the medication immediately resolved their reflux, and others advocating for open communication with rheumatologists to find the right balance between managing disease and tolerating side effects.

Try omeprazole I was given that to protect the lining of my stomach as it was/is a strong drug like naproxen is.

Always take arthritis meds (including Plaquenil) with food. Might add Pepcid or like drug, but check with Doc This works for me.

I use Nexium. It's an alternative to Omeprazole. NSAIDS are tough on the stomach lining. It's okay to pop the Tum/Rolaids. I take 3 at a time. It helps and it has calcium. :)

My pain specialist (also primary doctor) prescribed omeprazole years ago to protect stomach lining from meds she knew I'd be taking. Never had a problem so omeprazole works for me.
