Members discussed their experiences with vision issues while taking hydroxychloroquine, with the most common side effect being dry eyes, which several members described as uncomfortable, especially upon waking, though one found relief using Restasis eye drops. Nearly all members shared that their rheumatologists or ophthalmologists require regular eye exams, typically once or twice a year, to monitor for potential retinal damage, with most noting they have not experienced serious problems despite years of use. A recurring theme was that while retinal toxicity is a known risk, doctors generally consider it rare and most likely to occur only after at least ten years of use, making routine monitoring an important but manageable part of staying on the medication.

When I was taking hydroxycloroquin, I needed to have my eyes checked every 6 months because it can affect peripheral vision. It did not hurt me.

I too developed very dry eyes. Waking in the mornings was not fun. It felt like I had buckets of sand rubbing my eyes raw. I started using Restasis three months ago and I am finally to a point where my eyes feel moist again. It takes several months to work but it has helped greatly. I hope you can find something that will help your dry eyes too.
