Does Anyone Have Vision Issues Related To RA Flares?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Carrollton, TX

Usually when I'm in a flare or feeling particularly worn down, my eyes feel pretty agitated and my vision seems as though it loses focus, blurry. I've been to an ophthalmologist and had my eyes fully examined, need an updated prescription but was just curious if anyone experiences this as part of their symptoms with RA?

Members widely confirmed that vision issues, particularly chronic dry eyes, are common with rheumatoid arthritis, with many describing symptoms like dryness, grittiness, blurriness, redness, and recurring infections that worsen during flares or fatigue. Several members shared practical remedies that have helped them, including preservative-free drops like Systane or Refresh, prescription treatments like Restasis, using gel drops at night, warm water or heated eye masks like the Bruder mask, and one member noted that excessive steroid use can also cause wavy or blurry vision. A recurring theme was the importance of asking an eye doctor specifically about dry eye testing and treatment, as aggressive management can help prevent infections and improve comfort, with many members emphasizing that these symptoms are indeed connected to RA and not imagined.

Chronic dry eye is common with RA. The symptoms you describe seem to fit. I would ask your eye doc specifically about possibility of dry eye. In the meantime you could use the expensive eye drops like Systane or Refresh. (Do not use ones for eye redness- makes things worse.) Good luck.

I was just diagnosed with sjorgens syndrome, dry eyes and mouth. My eyes feel dry, gritty, sore and I tend to blink a lot. Eye drops help. Stay safe

I do have eye issues - redness, dryness and some blurry vision at times. Also prone to eye infections and burst blood vessels in the whites of my eyes. My immune system is very weak because of another health issue - but think this may be connected to RA.

Yes my eyes feel dryer than usual especially when I wake up. RA does cause dry eyes for most of us. I use sustain eye drops for dry eyes and it helps. There is also a prescription eye drop that works well. Talk to your doctor.
