Steroids

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Myrtle Beach, SC

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to take for inflammation/flare other than steroids? Any good results with meds that help? I can't take steroids for more than a few days and a low dose. It's so frustrating because that's all my doctor seems to prescribe when I'm in a flare. I know it works quick, but the side effects are too much and it doesn't last. Suggestions anyone??

Members responded to the question about alternatives to steroids for inflammation with a wide variety of suggestions, most commonly recommending NSAIDs like meloxicam, naproxen, and Aleve, as well as topical options such as Voltaren (diclofenac) gel and Arnicare, with many noting that the gel form is gentler on the stomach than oral medications. Several members shared natural remedies that have provided relief, including fresh ginger, turmeric with black pepper, CBD oil, Epsom salt baths, and warm water exercise classes, while others mentioned prescription options like Duexis (ibuprofen with stomach protection), Celebrex, or muscle relaxers like Flexeril. A recurring theme was the frustration with prednisone's harsh side effects despite its effectiveness, balanced by members' encouragement to experiment with different combinations and work closely with doctors to find what works best for each individual body.

Honestly, I have to take pain meds. Normally a flair for me is such terrible pain in my back and hips that I can hardly move. My flairs always last for 3 days, then they leave as quickly as they come. The other recommendations are great. I'm going to try some. Thank you all for your responses!

I've been on very low dosage of prednisone for over ten years. I work with my dr to take low dose when i can or she will raise it when i have a really bad flare up. However this isn't the only RA med I take. If there were a better way believe me I would try it! I can't stand the side effects

Cindy,
May I also recommend for you to try a soak in a warm bath with Epsom salts and or lavender to relax. Also, tai chi, yoga, modified chair excercises to build up your core and mindful meditation. I hope this helps.
