Help With Brain Fog

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone found any ways to combat the RA brain fog? I honestly thought I couldn't concentrate because I was in too much pain. But now after being in remission for a while, I'm having a flare. It's nowhere near as bad as the old ones, but I can't gather my thoughts to save my life

Members opened up about the frustrating and isolating experience of rheumatoid arthritis brain fog, sharing how it affects their ability to concentrate, communicate clearly, and participate confidently in conversations or daily tasks. Several members described practical strategies that have helped, including writing everything down in lists and notes, prioritizing deep and restful sleep, taking vitamin B12 supplements, and engaging in focus-building hobbies like crocheting, quilting, or knitting. A recurring theme was that brain fog often improves once the disease is better controlled with medication like biologics, and that stress, poor sleep, and flares can make it significantly worse.

Brain fog is just another one of the many symptoms. Once you get the disease under control, the brain fog subsides and may go away completely. Getting deep, restful sleep seems to help. I've had RA for over 20 years. When i first got sick, the brain fog was horrible. I thought i was losing my mind. After i was put on a biologic, the brain fog subsided. I have very little problem these days.

I have a lot of trouble with brain fog. I know I'm not stupid, but sometimes when I am with a group I don't want to participate because I don't always say what I had intended to say - things frequently sound like I can't keep a straight train of thought.

I write everything down, make lists, take notes. Even that is hard sometimes, but it is the best I have found. Other than that, I have noticed that the brain fog is so much worse when I don't sleep well. If there is anything you can do to get some rest, it might help.

Best wishes for a better tomorrow! I'll be thinking of you.
