Methotrexate And Fever

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Atlanta, GA

I just started methotrexate two weeks ago (taken two Monday doses so far) and I developed a fever a couple of days ago. It’s staying between 101 and 102.5 but nothing is bringing it down. I also have a cough (non productive), body aches, and a horse/sore throat. I’ve called my Dr multiple times and left a message but I haven’t heard back and I’m not sure what to do, as I have my next dose Monday and if I don’t hear back from her today, I won’t know whether its okay to take it. I’m really new to… read more

Members offered guidance to someone who developed a fever and flu-like symptoms shortly after starting methotrexate, with the strong consensus being to contact a doctor immediately and not take the next dose until cleared by medical staff, as infections while on this medication require prompt attention. Several members shared that their doctors instructed them to stop methotrexate whenever they got sick and resume only after recovering, while others mentioned common side effects like hoarseness, sore throat, and stomach issues that improved with adjustments like splitting the dose or drinking plenty of water. A recurring theme was frustration with the original poster's doctor not returning urgent calls, leading many to urge an ER visit if symptoms worsened, with relief expressed when the doctor finally responded, apologized for the communication breakdown, and temporarily stopped the medication until an infection could be ruled out.

Hi Becca.
Hope you are feeling better this AM, but you need to contact the doctor if you don't. And if you are still experiencing the same symptoms, try seeing the doctor or go to the ER. Praying that you are on the mend.

When I was on methotrexate and I got sick I had to stop it until I get well. But I keep a diary and written down every change in my body good are bad. And when I went to see my RA doctor I was able to give a good description of what was going on.

Dr finally messaged me last night and took me off MTX until I can get in to see my primary doc and get cleared of any infection or illness. She also apoligized and said she was never told of my messages and calls from her staff and that it would not happen again. I still feel crummy but at least now I know what to do, which helps a ton. Thank you guys again for all the help!!

Go to the E. R. You could have an infection and need to stop Methotrexate with antibiotics. Don't wait for your Dr. to call since they haven't called back.
