Members connected over the distressing experience of hair loss while on various RA medications, particularly methotrexate, with many sharing that their hair began shedding significantly despite taking folic acid and biotin supplements. Several members offered practical strategies that worked for them, including increasing folic acid dosage to 2mg daily with a prescription, taking Viviscal supplements, using scalp stimulators during shampooing, switching to gentler shampoos and conditioners, and checking vitamin D levels since deficiency can worsen hair loss. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of watching hair thin day by day, with members acknowledging it feels petty to complain about compared to more severe RA symptoms yet validating how deeply it affects self-esteem and quality of life.

Ive suffered hair loss from a couple different treatment drugs. I notified my Rheumy right away & he said take boitin & folic acid. OTC folic acid didn't do it so he called in a script. I take 2-1mg tabs of folic acid & 5000mcg Biotin daily. It works!!! I have long hair & I freaked when it started falling out in little clumps every morning. I take more precautions now like wear my hair in a braid @ nite while I sleep. Use a large tooth comb & large bristle brush. But the biotin & folic acid have it under control!!
Hope this helps.

I've never been on anything but methotrexate, but in 11 mos, I can't believe how much hair I've lost, and now my eyelashes are falling out, too. Apparently folic acid and biotin doesn't help for everyone!

I’ve had hair loss for the past 5-6 yrs. Gets much worse after anesthesia for surgeries. Was in to see my dermatologist & happened to mention it to her and she said there’s a supplement called Viviscal that will help. Felt like the Dr had seriously recommended it, why not try. I’ve been taking it for about 3 years and it does help. No side effects and I order on Amazon Prime (just because it’s easier). You take 2/day - morn & nite.
Hair loss seems to be part of RA life.
Hope you get better!

Oh my!!!! I would contact your doctor right away. I take 2 Folic Acids every morning and it has helped a lot, and I'm on Methotrexate.

Hi, @A myRAteam Member, when I saw my rheumatologist last month, I actually had him check my vitamin D (which insurance don't pay for....$200!), and mine was in the normal range. Not sure what's up w/my hair loss. I have a hair appt tmoro. She's always surprised how much it's thinned just in 2 mos. Oh well! Glad yours has quit falling out😊👍!
