Collar Bone Pain And Swelling

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Maryland, MD

Good Morning,
Has anyone had their collar bone have swelling. My collar bone was sore yesterday and this morning I have swelling. Also my Ankle is swollen too. I'm pretty sure the ankle is related to RA. But I am not sure why my collar bone would swell up. Thought I we see if anyone else has had this happen, before I make yet another doctors appointment. Thanks you for any info. Hugs

Members validated the original poster's concern about collar bone swelling, with many sharing that they have experienced similar pain and swelling in their collar bones, shoulders, and surrounding areas due to RA affecting the joints and soft tissue in that region. Several members offered practical relief strategies including ice application, gentle massage with essential oils, sleeping on the back in an elevated position, using heating pads or neck warmers, and cortisone injections for persistent inflammation. A recurring theme was that RA is systemic and can cause inflammation anywhere there is connective tissue, with many emphasizing the importance of consulting a rheumatologist during flares and recognizing when medication adjustments may be needed.

Hi yes, I have the pain in the collar bones. My shoulders are affected by the RA. My doctor explained that the collar bone has a joint with both the shoulder as well as next to the throat area. These joints also get inflamed and sore. Hope that helps. The ankles are also prone to pain, inflammation and swelling. It sounds as if you are having a flare. Take your meds and rest. Good Luck thinking of you.

I also have had pain and swelling in my collar bone. The swelling affects my throat and swallowing too. Ive often wondered if its just radiating from my shoulder. All I know is that every joint in my body seems affected by this RA at one point or another. I hope you rest and feel better soon.

Yes Patches. I also have the swelling and pain of the collar and Breastbone. I can't stand even wearing a bra sometimes and Seatbelts. Another RA annoyance. Sorry you are flaring so badly. One day at a time. My shoulder is starting to feel better.

Some doctors say that RA will not cause soft tissue problems. And that’s a bunch of BS. I have had collarbone pain many times. A lot of it has to do with shoulder joint swelling. It seems to leech over to my collarbone. My ankles swell also. If I used a screwdriver my hand hurts. Soft tissue Pain. I think a lot of it has to do with overcompensating from one pain or one area causing pain to another area. And lack of use of a particular muscle. But soft tissues can be affected by RA.
