Chest Pain,SOB, And Leg Weakness

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
NC

I’ve been having chest pains and slight shortness of breath for last couple days. Also weakness in my legs for several months. Anyone else having this? RA related?

Good news Barbara Ulicny, just keep track of your leg weakness, they kept telling me it was probably due to a flare up or my meds, but without an ultrasound on the leg artery, they can not know for sure if you have vascular disease & blockages in the main artery in your legs.

I was lucky that someone finally decided to check.
They did both a lower extremity venous imaging & lower extremity Arterial doppler imaging.
The went into the Cath Lab to view the blockages in leg arteries, where they saw how bad it was.
So just know, keep in your mind, if your leg weakness continues or get worse, you may need tests, such as these.
I blew it off for too long, so did my primary & R/A doctor.
We were all surprised by the results of test performed.

I think you should find out if that is a side effect because it certainly sounds like one. I didnt' look at your treatment but I would call the pharmacist and Major side effects should be reported to your doctor.

I went to see my PCP this morning. He said I’m having a reaction to the meds. Will probably get an MRI on my back to see if that’s what’s causing my legs to be weak. Saw my rheumatologist this afternoon. She told me to stop meds and if I’m okay i can start methotrexate this weekend again. I’ll see her again on the 9th of August. No heart or lung problems! Praise God

Good @A myRAteam Member !
I would definitely check with your doctor to rule out a heart problem but I went through something similar with a RA flare up last winter. It was hard to tell the difference but costochondritis pain was the culprit not a heart event. Since you also have leg weakness I would suspect the two were related and caused by an RA flare up. In my case I went through a course of prednisone dose pack to bring the flare down and changed my biologic to Xeljanz which is working better for me. I hope you find relief!

Like @A myRAteam Member said, it could be anxiety. However, RD can affect our organs too. Some people on here have nodules in their lungs & there are several that have weakness in their legs & have fallen. Please visit with your rheumy about this. Better safe than sorry.
