I was on MTX for about 4.5 years. It didn’t really control my pain because I was only able to tolerate 5 tablets /week. Therapeutic level is 8/week. I finally changed doctors and she dc’d the MTX and started Arava (leflunomide) in July 2017. I can’t believe the difference.

@A myRAteam Member I've been taking methotrexate since 2009, except for the first 5 months of this year. But, I took it in injection form, rather than pills, cause I have a very sensitive stomach. In May my Dr lowered my dose and put me on pills. They made me feel very bloated, so I just started taking them right before I went to bed, and so far no bad side effects for me

The idea of medication is less is best. In my situation, my Dr. prescribed methotrexate, then Plaquenil and then sulfasalazine. These were used and increased gradually up to a certain dose. Eye exams for Plaquenil users (don't forget). Steroids are to get you over the painful part until your meds start to work. They are sometimes maintained in small doses, here too they can effect the eyes (cataracts). I then moved to Enbrel and was ill every 8-12 weeks. I have lung issues and this was not the drug for me. I am currently on rituximab infusions and not relieved yet. I think sometimes the search for the right medication is ongoing for some.

I was on MTX, not working on its own, steroids added. Only felt okay with both. Dr. also added Plaquinil. After 9 months still no great. I'm currently taking Humira shot every 2 weeks and Plaquinil. Back to feeling like myself.

Started with steroids upon initial diagnosis with GP. Methotrexate then added. After no response, remicade was added. After several months, I realized I was actually feeling better. Was eventually weaned off the steroids and continued with methotrexate and remicade. The combo gave me my life back
