Medicare And Biologics

Are there any folks on this group in the USA who are on Medicare and using a biologic such as Humira or Remicade? I'm interested in knowing how you manage the copay. These drugs are beyond expensive. Any good strategies for cutting the costs?

Members shared strategies for managing expensive biologic copays on Medicare, with a key distinction emerging that manufacturer discount cards and copay assistance programs typically available to those with commercial insurance do not work for Medicare patients due to federal regulations prohibiting such negotiations. Several members confirmed that switching from self-injected biologics like Humira to infused treatments like Remicade can significantly reduce costs since infusions are covered under Medicare Part B rather than Part D, and supplemental insurance may help cover remaining copays or deductibles. A recurring theme was the importance of working closely with doctors and hospital billing managers to explore income-based programs, manufacturer foundations, and supplemental coverage options, though members acknowledged the frustrating complexity and lack of transparency in planning for these costs before Medicare enrollment.

Try calling the company who makes your medicine, many company's are willing to give large discounts ! I can' t promise anything , but that is what I've heard. Good luck
