I have been on methotrexate since June and it was effective for a few months, however, out of nowhere the pain came back even worse ! It's weird because the pain is better in some places and worse in others. My doctor has introduced me to biologics, so I've been reading about my options. We will discuss them in our next appointment. I am nervous though because there are a lot of risks involved. What has your experience been like? Has any of the biologic response modifiers worked for you?

Members shared mixed experiences with methotrexate, with many describing how it initially worked well but gradually became less effective over time, leading their doctors to recommend transitioning to biologic medications. Several members reported significant success with Enbrel, describing it as life-changing and offering years of remission with minimal side effects, though some noted building up a tolerance after extended use. A recurring theme was encouragement for the original poster to stay open to biologics despite the fear, with members emphasizing that finding the right treatment often requires trying different options and that the benefits of achieving remission far outweigh the risks.

When I was first diagnosed I was on 60 mg of @prednisone and also @methotrexate. Initially I was on low doses of @methotrexate, but over time the dose needed to be increased for me to feel better. Prior to discontinuing it, the dose was split into morning and evening hoping that I would absorb it better also because of the higher dose. My doctor recommeded i start on biologics. I no longer take @methotrexate, am off the @prednisone and only use @Enbrel. I was afraid, too, but in retrospect I am glad I agreed to use @Enbrel. I feel so much better, my lab test results are much better; I always tell the doctors and pharmacy people that i have my life back. I know that the early days of diagnosis and treatment are rough. Be open to what will help you feel better. Wishing you well.

I had problems with oral methotrexate and now use injections and these work fine. Not sure they are helping with pain at all though but all have no side effects.

Same with me. It quit working for me after about seven months. I ended up in ER with respiratory failure and almost died. Tests showed I had an allergic reaction to the methotrexate. There are side effects with most all the RA drugs. You have to weigh out the pros and cons.

Yes, that's how it was for me in the early days prednisone and methx, then Enbrel which worked wonders for years. now my Rhemy thinks i may have build up a tolerance so we will try something else. I hope it works.
