Dropping Things

I'm wondering if any of you have this problem. I pick up something with my right hand and all of a suddenk sometimes it just lets go of whatever I'm holding ~ no warning or indication I'm going to quit holding it. Doesn't happen with my left hand. Haven't mentioned it to my Rheumatologist, but after it happened a couple of times yesterday I decided to ask this group. I hope none of you have this problem, but if you do it might help me feel better about all the stuff I drop and depending what… read more

Members responded enthusiastically to someone asking about unexpectedly dropping things with their right hand, with nearly everyone confirming this is a common and deeply frustrating RA experience that affects both hands and leads to broken dishes, spilled drinks, and constant cleanup. Several members shared practical strategies including using cups with lids and handles, moving more slowly and deliberately, always using both hands for important items, checking grip strength before lifting, and avoiding fragile or hot items when hands feel weak. A recurring theme was the relief of realizing this isn't clumsiness or a neurological problem but rather an RA symptom caused by inflammation affecting grip strength and nerve signals, with many expressing gratitude for the community's validation and shared understanding.

Yep, this happens to me. I broke a brand new iPhone this way. I don't know this but for me when I have swelling/pain in my hands I'm not able to determine how much pressure I'm putting on something that I'm holding and tend to drop things. This happens pretty often.

I got up out off my recliner and mr right knee wasn't even working right. I tripped and almost fell into the glass cabinet. Weird. Both knees were replaced.

You know what? I'm glad you posted this question! I do drop things unexpectedly & it's also in my right hand. And, yes, I've assumed it to be RA related. Thought of doing hand exercises because my hands frequently hurt, and to strengthen them. Haven't done it just yet. Don't be too hard on yourself!
