I'm on methotrexate and sulfasalazine. Lately I've noticed that my thinking has slowed down. I'm not as sharp as before. I even find myself asking stupid questions that would have been obvious to me before. Have any of you experienced this on one or more of these meds? Of course I'll mention this to my rheumatologist when I see her in a couple of weeks.

Members overwhelmingly confirmed that methotrexate can cause significant brain fog and cognitive slowing, often referred to as "chemo brain" since methotrexate is a mild chemotherapy drug, with many describing symptoms like fuzzy thinking, short-term memory loss, difficulty multitasking, and a "wooly-brained" sensation. Several members shared that the fog improved slowly over many months, and some found relief by taking folic acid, getting adequate sleep, napping during the day, and managing stress, while others noted the combination of RA itself plus medication side effects made cognitive issues even more challenging. A recurring theme was reassurance that these experiences are real and common, with members encouraging each other to discuss symptoms with their doctors and to be patient with themselves during the adjustment period.

I used to be on Methotrexate. If you investigate it, Methotrexate in a mild form of a drug they use for chemotherapy. Studies show that chemotherapy drugs can cause that fuzziness or "chemotherapy brain." I know as an IT professional, I see how thinking clearly can be difficult sometimes.

I too was on Methotrexate. It definitely gave me brain fog and it made me so tired I can barely walk around after 3 in the afternoon. I had to lay down on the sofa everyday. I was glad I got off of it.

The brain fog is one of the many symptoms of RA. Before i got RA , i had a near photographic memory. When the RA symptoms started , so did the brain fog. I thought i was losing my mind. I could no longer multi task & could barely remember my own name. Methotrexate makes it even worse because it makes your immune system so weak. Take folic acid & a good multi vitamin and get plenty of sleep each night and lay down in the afternoon. Even if it's only 15 minutes it will help.
