Members shared mixed experiences with Leflunomide after switching from methotrexate, with some finding significant relief from pain and inflammation within weeks to months while others experienced troubling side effects or saw no improvement at all. Several members described success when Leflunomide was combined with biologics like Humira, Cimzia, or Actemra, though reported side effects included severe nausea and vomiting, persistent diarrhea, high blood pressure, hair changes, skin breakouts, and possible muscle spasms. A recurring theme was the deeply personal nature of finding the right medication, with members encouraging patience through the trial-and-error process and emphasizing that what works beautifully for one person may not work at all for another.

My Rheumatologist put me on Leflunomide 10mg. last October and 3 days later all my pain and swelling went away. I thought this had to be a miracle drug, but my doctor said, no, it does not work that fast. She explained it was a combination of the Methotrexate,15mg weekly & Hydroxychlor 200mg plus folic acid. I have experienced no flares since then, and no side effects from the Leflunomide. All in all, it took 10 months for the drugs to become effective. Do not be discouraged if it takes months before you find relief. All is worth it.

I started Leflunomide last year. It took my inflammation way down and I had no side effects. I have tried adding Methotrexate and I had side effects that were worse than my symptoms, so I dropped it. Getting ready to try Humira this week. But everyone is different. I have learned that what works for one person may not work for another. You just have to keep trying until you find your best concoction. Best of luck.

All the meds have side effects. It's just a matter of finding one that works for you with the least amount of side effects. I was put on it after mtx but after my third drug they have decided I cannot tolerate these strong meds I know someone else who is on it with great success and very little side effects. Give it a go and good luck

@A myRAteam Member, I don't know anything about the new medication you'll be starting. But I will pray that you have optimal results with minimal side effects. Blessings to you.

Yes! I took MTX for 6 months and never did get the pain and swelling under control. I started Leflumine 10 mg, with Hydroxyquinone, 2 mo ago and it is working So Much Better. Sometimes, but Not very often, I may feel a bit nausea, it is rare. Getting blood work done next week and hoping there are no bad #s there! I would sure give these 2 meds a try!
