Has Anyone Tried Essential Oils For Pain Relief?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I don't want to take pain meds. Looking into natural remedies. I take turmeric and probiotics. Also rotate Advil and Tylenol all day long. I've read about oils for pain that can be taken orally, soaking or burning. Interested in others opinions.

Natural solutions are always best however there's no essential oils that can slow down or stop the auto-immune response . I was a Clinical Aromatherapist practitioner for years. Essential oils help with symptoms and offer some relief but unfortunately don't stop RA. And sometimes they even interact with meds. But definitely use them for topical pain management although it's not a long term solution. Just talk to an Certified Aromatherapist about medicinal interactions before you begin. There are also oils you should avoid with auto-immune. It's not your regular case of arthritis or inflammation. It's your immune system. Additionally they can't stop the deformation of joints.

If I'm in serious pain, it's because the inflammation isn't controlled and my doctor has given me leeway to do short spurts of prednisone as needed. Right now Advil is working well enough, but I don't take it every single day.

That said, I've had some mild success with arnica topical gel. Turmeric didn't seem to do anything for me, and I didn't notice a difference with fish oil, although I eat salmon every week just on general health principles. I use spearmint and bergamot essential oils to help with depression, and eucalyptus and peppermint sprays at night on my pillow to help with congestion. Lavender scented epsom salts soaks... ahhhhhh good stuff. If I'm in serious pain, it's because the inflammation isn't controlled and my doctor has given me leeway to take Celebrex or short spurts of Prednisone as needed.

What RA meds are you currently taking? If you're having to take pain meds, perhaps the RA drugs are not working well enough. Talk to your rheumy about alternatives.

I seldom take pain meds but I do use Voltaire creme for the bad days. I just muck thru the aches I have stomache issues with a lot of meds and a sulfa allergy so I can't do a lot of pain meds . It's hard to find something that works and lasts.
Unfortunately what works for me might not work for you . Trial and error is what I do . Sorry not much of a help I'm afraid .
