Knee Pain And Just "giving Away" - No Fall Quite Yet!

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Plainview, TX

Last weekend I was working in the kitchen and evidently turned wrong on my left knee - excruciating pain!! I have never had consistent knee problems or swelling. Since last weekend, it has been swollen and tender but with my cane, I managed to get along. Since then it has "tweeked" me about a dozen more times. Takes my breath away! I have had to use my cane all week and am fed up with it. Just the wrong move and BAM it hits me again. Is this RA related or another problem? I have bone on bone and… read more

Members rallied around someone experiencing sudden, excruciating knee pain that kept 'giving away,' with many urging immediate medical evaluation through X-rays or MRI to rule out tendon damage, sprains, or worsening bone-on-bone deterioration that could worsen with each misstep. Several members shared practical relief strategies from their own experiences, including wearing supportive braces during the day but not at night, using ice and elevation, trying cortisone injections for temporary relief, alternating heat and cold therapy, and considering glucosamine supplements or gel injections as alternatives to knee replacement surgery. A recurring theme was the difficult balance between managing unbearable pain and the mounting financial burden of medical care, with the original poster ultimately finding relief through a cortisone injection and deciding to postpone knee replacement surgery until absolutely necessary.

@A myRAteam Member, so very happy to report, I did go have xrays and see our local orthopedic. It was just as I expected - bone and bone and candidate for a knee replacement whenever I'm ready. He did give me cortisone injection and it's so very much better!! No pain! It still feels tight but I can live with that. we will put off the replacement until it gets worse or I just decide I'm ready. LIFE IS GOOD! Thanks for your concerns and comments!

the saga continues! I went this morning for xrays and see the orthopedic doctor on Tuesday. Following xrays, once I got back to work and sat down, the next time I stood, it grabbed me again. This time I was unable to move for the pain, absolutely no weight on that leg. They helped me out to my car to go home. Then after lunch break, I stood up to come back to work and no pain... it still felt funny and unstable but no more stabbing, breathtaking pain. What the heck??? Glad I'm going Tuesday. Hope it is a quick, easy diagnosis, but we all know my chances of that are slim. Going to take it easy this weekend. Please continue to lift me and my husband up in prayers. it has been a very rough month!!

You will get there, this is time for you to take to your self. Rest, read a good book, do you have a cane or walker, use it for a while to keep pressure off knee. I slept with my brace on for a few days because when I slept at night I would hit it changing positions and wake in excruciating pain. It will heal and you will get better because you are an RA Warrior. Please keep us posted

@A myRAteam Member sorry but I believe your tendons have either separated or torn, this a rheumatologist would know and it will not show up on an x-ray, your femur thigh bone is slipping off of Tibia lower portion of leg, It is not stable because of the tendons. What has happened will required a MRI, if it continues to get worse you may need surgery or tendon replacement. Wear a good supportive knee brace. Did you ever get in to see a RA? Best not to get a steroid injection at this time as it can make it worse. Oh wish I could be there to help you.
