Methotrexate And Adding Medication

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I was wondering if doctors will put you on numerous RA medications at once. I'm taking methotrexate right now with folic acid but I'm not seeing much result after 6 weeks, so I dont know if they will make me stop it or double up.
Thanks!

Members shared their experiences with methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, reassuring someone at six weeks that it typically takes two to three months to see full results, with some noting it took as long as six to eight months for certain medications to work. Several members described their own medication combinations, including methotrexate paired with biologics like Humira, Enbrel, or Actemra, steroids such as prednisone or Medrol to manage pain during the adjustment period, and NSAIDs or muscle relaxers for additional relief. A recurring theme was the importance of advocating for yourself by speaking up when a treatment isn't working, staying patient through the trial period, and working closely with your rheumatologist to adjust dosages or add medications as needed.

I started with @Plaquenil and now 14 yrs later, im on 4 meds, Folic acid and a pain med. As your disease gets worse, they should be adding on more meds, one at a time. Im also on @Prednisone now for a flare up. This disease is so stressful as i just want to wake up one day pain free!

yeah..I take 3 different and a nsaid with a muscle relaxer..if its not working well enough alone u need to speak up and tell them "what else can we do this isn't enough?" and go from there that should be enough for the doctor to add something better or figure out another plan

I think what my doctors have told me is methotrexate has to build up over a period of 8 weeks and works best in conjunction with a biologic

Ask her for Medrol instead of the prednisone. They're both steroids and they both work the same but I have found that I have less issues and side effects with medrol.

I started with prednisone and MTX. Then after a month and half she doubled my MTX and my prednisone comes down 1 mg every two weeks. The prednisone is what gave me relief from the bad pain. As I slowly get to a smaller dose the pain is getting worse sadly :( but my dr told me it takes 2-3 months for the MTX to really work and for your body to get use to it.
