Members shared mixed experiences comparing Plaquenil, methotrexate injections, and Arava for rheumatoid arthritis, with several reporting hair loss and nausea from methotrexate while others found the injections easier to tolerate than pills when taken with folic acid. Many members emphasized that Plaquenil's risk of vision problems is incredibly rare when monitored with yearly eye exams, with one member describing how their optometrist carefully tracks any changes using the latest research, while others noted side effects like hair loss, weight gain, or groin stiffness that improved with dose adjustments. A recurring theme was the importance of regular blood work and monitoring, trusting your medical team, and giving medications time to work, with one member sharing how Plaquenil took about six weeks to provide a noticeable boost in energy and reduction in pain despite initial fears about starting new treatments.

I have taken methotrexate (tablets at first then injections 2 years ago) and plaquenil for 6 years. The methotrexate can definitely make you quite nauseous at times. I have had no real change with my eyes over that time either and i have had them checked every year since starting medications. My optometrist is exceptionally good at monitoring my eyes and even shows me the latest research on which tests should be done!

I think with any combination of medication that you could be on it's important to monitor side effects/new symptoms and get your blood tested regularly!

The hair loss is upsetting; I too have loss, just started taking Biotin, we'll see if it helps.

I take both Plaquenil and Methotrexate. I have mild hair loss ARAVA is often prescribed instead of Methotrexate. Both Metho and ARAVA can have liver issues.

That's interesting. I had a slight accident in January and thought I had a groin strain. Its almost gone but, now and again it seems to flair up. Wondering if it's connected !

I take plaquenil and lost a lot of my hair! Also my pelvic/groin area is stiff and it hurts since I been on plaquenil. My doctor just lowered my dose so we will see if that makes a difference.
